What Are Cash On Delivery (COD) Scams

Cash on delivery scams targets consumers who demand for cash for deliveries that:
1) They did not make an order for; or
2) Did not match their expected purchases.

With the recent rise in transactions on E-commerce websites, these scams are becoming more prevalent.
Scammers have been more creative in terms of luring consumers to fall for these scams. These scammers usually:

  • Pose as a seller on marketplaces and send you parcels that you have not made and order for; or
  • Create fake social media accounts to lure consumers to make an order.

Most of the scammers then send their COD parcels over to freight forwarders, who then assign the parcels to J&T Express.

As such, we do not have direct contact with these scammers.

How Does COD Scams Work
Scammers send their parcels over to freight forwarders company. These companies then consolidate all of the parcels from various suppliers and send them to logistics company like J&T Express to handle their last-mile deliveries.

J&T Express then sends these parcels to your doorstep and collects cash on delivery on behalf of the freight forwarders. Once cash is collected, the cash is remitted to the forwarders who then remit the cash over to the senders of the parcel.

Later, receivers of the parcel realise that the item they had received is neither the item they had purchase nor an item of the purchased value.

Incorrect Cash On Delivery Request
There can be situations where sellers may have incorrectly chosen the Cash On Delivery option while shipping out their product even though payment had already been made.

During these instances, J&T Express will escalate this issue with the shipper to work out an appropriate solution. You will be kept closely updated with the process.

Our Fight Against COD Scams
In order to prevent these scams from taking place, J&T Express constantly work closely with freight forwarders and our partners to identify and blacklist scammers from our services.

Here Are Ways For You To Protect Yourself From COD Scams

  • DO NOT Pay For Any Parcels That You Have Not Bought

  • Inform Members That Are Receiving The Parcel For You:
    • If others are helping you to receive a parcel that requires COD, let them know what it is, when to expect it and how much to pay.
  • Don't Be Afraid To Reject It:
    • Always check the item description and delivery details. If they look suspicious, Reject It!
